Ambitous crane lifting with MV "ERIS J"

11.05.2015

Thanks to thorough preparations and the utmost precision the modern heavy-lift vessel MV "ERIS J" could take on board for a safe maritime transport two huge heavy gantry cranes in an exceptional loading, recently.

The two cranes of the type "Liebherr LPS 550" and "Liebherr LPS 600" which have a weight of 410 and 460 tons were lifted with the onboard heavy lift cranes on deck. In tandem operation, the board cranes have a lifting capacity of up to 800 tons.

The peculiarity of the shipment was that the fully assembled gantry cranes have a rail board carriage. Since the track width is greater than the width of the hatch covers of the vessel, the heavy-lift experts of ARKON Shipping & Projects and JUMBO have developed an individual solution: the ship-between decks held on board which are actually used in the cargo area at different levels should be spread out for loading on the weather deck and thus the deck width should be widened to starboard over freeboard. In order to enable that the cranes could be moved to their final position after being loaded on deck, rails were also installed in the appropriate track width on deck.

After the approval by the classification society DNV-GL, necessary for the strength and stability calculation, had been issued within a few days, a first partial loading was taken on board and preparations were started in the port of Antwerp. Finally, it was necessary to ensure that the cranes are seaworthy during the journey.

After MV "ERIS J" had docked at the pier of the Liebherr plant in the port of Rostock, the on-board stability pontoon was positioned which is improving the stability of the vessel when lifting a heavy load. Loading of the cranes was started immediately after all these preparation works had been done.

Thanks to good preparation, the two heavyweights could be loaded by the very experienced crew with a lot of concentration and finesse without incident and within a few hours.
After the cranes had been backed up on deck and lashed, the ship was able to start its journey toward the Philippines. There the two cranes will arrive after 30 days voyage and will be set to their subsequent pier by our vessel's ship's cranes.
