Shipping company passed a combined ISM and ISO 9001 audit with very good results

10.09.2015

All management processes are to be regularly audited in terms of their effectiveness in complying with required standards. Almost every department and every process was this year again examined for two days.
From July 1st 1998, certification according to ISM (International Safety Management) is compulsory for all vessels in the international shipping industry. The ISM Code has been made compulsory via the Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) and is there found in chapter 9 (Management for the safe operation of ships). The aim is to protect the people on board as well as the marine environment and to ensure proper handling of the vessel. The ISM Code is one of the binding codes and is required by law. The elements specified in the code must then be implemented by means of an internal strategy of the company and be reviewed regularly. The "Designated Person Ashore" (DPA), Captain Andreas Schepers, is there to be in direct contact with the management.
Furthermore, the shipping company was also audited in terms of quality management standard ISO 9001. The ISO 9000 et. seqq. Standards document principles for quality management measures. The ISO 9001 Standard comprises minimum requirements which an organization must comply with, but the organization is to be subject to a continuous improvement process.
